Amazon are awesome – Lion
My Kindle died on Saturday. I hadn’t touched it for a few days but Saturday evening I bought some new books (one on Open CL programming, another on Grep and Cathedral and the Bazaar) and when I went to grab my Kindle I found that the screen had randomly decided to give up working with white lines running down it. I instantly though “it’s cracked” but I really can’t tell. I phoned Amazon immediately to see how much it would cost to get the screen replaced (Or whether I was going to have to invest in a brand new Kindle, which would have been very annoying). It turns out Amazon are awesome. My new Kindle has already been sent and should come today (It’s now 2AM). This cost me nothing. I have to send the old one back but apart from that I get a new Kindle for free. This is incredible and a level of customer service I’d like to see more often. I know the primary reason behind it is that Amazon want me to keep buying books and that they will make far more money from books than from Kindle sales, but still. It’s a nice feeling. I admit that my Kindle goes through periods of not being used but when I do use it I love it. I just don’t read that much anymore.
Prior to my Kindle experience I took the plunge and installed Lion on both my Macs. I like it. It’s fun to use and the shiny factor hasn’t worn off yet. The only problem I’ve had is the full screen support and dual monitors, I hope they update it so I can use a second monitor whilst an app is in full screen!.
